Review: Barry J Hughes ‘This Way Up’

Barry J Hughes is an Irish singer songwriter hailing from Carrickmacross in south Monaghan. We got a sneak preview of his EP ‘This Way Up’ which is out today. He’s starting to make waves in the Irish music scene having appeared on The Sessions on Dublin City FM, and LMFM.

‘This Way Up’ is a great easy-listening, chill album with a good mixture of catchy acoustics and relaxing piano numbers. Barry’s voice is deep and enticing, and his Irish background shines through in the first track ‘Judgement Day’ which has an undeniable sliver of Irish trad. The EP also includes a well done cover of Jack L’s ‘Georgie Boy’, sung in a sorrowful passionate voice, befitting of the original.
