“Slow West” Reviewed

An old school Western with a quirky edge, starring Michael Fassbender and Kodi Smit-McPhee. The story follows young Scotsman Jay, who’s travelling across the Western wilderness of 1890’s Colorado in search of his love. Accompanied by bounty hunter Silas, the naive young ‘Romeo’ soon discovers why it’s called the Wild West.

Beautifully shot, this traditional-style Western has an edge that makes you imagine that Wes Anderson was somehow involved. There are flaws to it’s cinematography and production but I think that may have been down to budgetary values. This is director John Maclean’s first feature, having previously written and directed two shorts (both featuring Michael Fassbender) and working primarily as a musician/composer (known for soundtracks such as High Fidelity) so personally, for a first major venture, he knocked it out of the park.

Watch if you liked: The Wild Bunch; The Grand Budapest Hotel; Django Unchained.

Trigger warnings: violence, shooting, death
