Cry Baby is the debut album from Melanie Martinez and was released on the 14th of August via Atlantic Records and debuted at number one on the Alternative Albums Chart. It’s an ambitious concept album. The bubble gum exterior is seeped in incredibly dark undertones, tackling subjects such as death, deperession, and abuse.
Cry Baby takes you on a journey through the life of the character ‘Cry Baby’ who Martinez has encompassed. From her broken family, to societal pressure, to heartbreak and abuse, this album covers every bad thing that could possible happen to anyone. It’s a collection of hypnotic alt-pop songs that are meticulously crafted and intertwined with childish sound effects that amplify the creepily sweet nature of Cry Baby and her stories. The physical copies of the CD contain a storybook that chronicles the story of the album, along with illustrations by Chloe Tersigni.
The leading single from the album was ‘Pity Party’, which was released on the 1st of June. A tale of loneliness and an unhinged mentality, Cry Baby sings of no one showing up to her party. The video is over the top childish and a little bit depressing. It’s filmed in a beautiful old fashioned house that’s decorated in colourful streamers and toys. The video was directed by Martinez herself, so it perfectly fits into the meaning of the song, “It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to, I’ll cry until the candles burn down this place, I’ll cry until my pity party’s in flames”.
